Just a sliver of sight and sound
A rush in the safe darkness

I never thought of you
Until recently
When I wondered where I was going.
Where did you go? How did you find your way?
I should have a purpose, but

I never thought of you
Until I had to think about something.
What to write about…
Always fascinated by what I don't understand,
You were the obvious selection.

I never thought of you
But I see you in myself
Little songs and long skirts and the sun
Which I finally prefer to rain
And you wrote, which I never knew,

I thought you just painted,
Which I can't stand
The way the tiny brush hairs part
And leave wisps around the line I actually want
Just makes me long to smash fishbowls

I thought you just sculpted,
You made masks draped in
Grapes and leaves and twigs
And a tall, flat tree, with
Nature on it. Dried snakeskin
And lizard skeletons creep under my skin.

I never thought of you
Until these trinkets of memory
Painted with dried flowers
A crown upon my head
In the musty evening sun

I never thought of you
Until the leaves started to fall
I ran my hands over the
Rusted fence, in my mind
As it's long gone

I never thought of you
Until they told me I look just like you
And suddenly
I want a part of you
I want you to come back.

I'm not sad
But I'm so curious
I want to live the world through your eyes.
They've always been
Just a sliver of sight and sound
A rush in the safe darkness.
A poem! One of my favorites I've written. :)
Although I wrote it a few months ago, I'm submitting it to EverythingPoetry's 'loss' contest.
